Fallsgate‘s most elusive mariner, Captain Varekka, and its most treacherous currents meet at the far west pier, home to her fishing vessel, the Krummholz Gale. She maintains her berth, here positioned strategically within a screen of swirling silt and white water that deters the heavy, deep-draft vessels of the Ognenstrof navy.

Born of Ognenstrovan and Yisean parentage, Varekka has spent her life within the Mahyim basin, owing allegiance neither to Ognenstrof nor Yisea. There, she  developed mastery of the water that borders on the supernatural. Her vessel is a common sight at the inspectors’ docks, usually silvered with a high-value cargo of deep-water trout to justify her frequent, unpredictable departures into the morning mist.

Varekka’s true prosperity, however, is built upon a foundation of shadows rather than scales. Known as much for her rebellious contempt for naval authority as for her navigational brilliance, she operates at the center of a complex web of influence involving the Information, Thieves, and Pirate Guilds. While she maintains a professional veneer with the Transportation Guild for delicate deliveries, her primary allegiance remains strictly tied to profit and the high-stakes “game” of the crossing. She provides a vital, off-the-ledger conduit for those seeking to bypass the regulated ferry routes, moving passengers and restricted cargo across the four hundred mile expanse of the lake with a precision that leaves no wake and no witnesses.

Though her wealth is significant enough to afford a quiet retirement on or away from the fertile delta plains, Varekka remains anchored to the spray and the cold of the west pier by a relentless competitive drive. She views the Ognenstrof patrols not as a threat to her safety, but as obstacles in a grand, perpetual puzzle. For travelers like Elgyon and Phine, she represents the only viable alternative to the exposed public docks of the inner harbor. To step onto her deck is to enter a space where national borders and political uprisings hold no weight, surrendered entirely to the whims of the inky water and the sharp, analytical mind of a woman who answers only to the lake.
