Betala is of Yisean descent. She is the unacknowledged bastard child of Yisean nobility. Her father allowed her to grow up in his palace alongside her half siblings, but he never acknowledged her as anything more than the daughter of a servant. When Betala was old enough to be apprenticed, her father forced her mother to find a Guild willing to take her.
Betala was no stranger to hard work, often helping her mother clean the halls and prepare meals since she was old enough to walk. Yet she also displayed an unusual intellect and relentless curiosity. If her mother could have afforded it, or if her father had been willing to pay for it, Betala might have been sent to school to become one of the few female scholars in the universities of the Seven Kingdoms.
Instead, she joined the Information Guild, where she studied the contents of its libraries and archives with tireless intensity. Betala rarely worked in the field. The Guild instead relied on her keen analytical mind, using her as a researcher and interpreter of complex information.
She never forgot her origins as she rose through the ranks, and she learned to move with equal ease among servants, guild operatives, and nobility alike. Now in her seventies, Betala has led the Nolading Information Guild for the past ten years, guiding its intelligence with patience, memory, and quiet authority.
