Cendomvita has known relative stability for more than two centuries since the fall of Mushkinek’s uprising, but stability has never guaranteed safety. When the Ravens strike Neverharbor, the news reaches most of Vidora only as rumor, fragmented and unconfirmed, easy to dismiss by those who benefit from disbelief. Distance dulls urgency. Comfort encourages denial. While others debate what is true, events continue to unfold.

Hile, a historian and well-established transporter of goods, accepts a questionable commission at the edge of that denial. The assignment carries risk, but risk accompanies every opportunity. After careful deliberation, he entrusts the task to his youngest son, Phine, convinced the dangers are manageable and the chances of success outweigh the uncertainty.

What follows sends two brothers in opposite directions. Aylman, the elder, has already become a successful man, simultaneously advancing both his personal goals and his father’s business. Phine, the younger, is still becoming one, forced to step into the reality that he could never experience from books alone. Though separated by distance, both encounter the same gathering storm. Violence, uncertainty, and divided loyalties force each to confront realities neither fully understands. Each must navigate choices shaped by ambition, loyalty, and survival, yet neither can escape the consequences of decisions made by others.

Betrayal does not arrive all at once. It accumulates through small concessions, quiet rationalizations, and choices made to avoid worse outcomes. Each decision feels survivable in isolation. Together, they reshape loyalty, duty, and self-understanding.

The Weight of Small Betrayals examines how betrayal serves different ends and carries unequal weight. Aylman, the elder brother, embraces compromise as strategy, advancing his goals through deliberate concessions that gradually erode restraint. Phine, the younger brother, experiences betrayal more often than he wields it, inheriting consequences created by the choices of others, sometimes without recognizing them for what they are. One learns to justify compromise. The other grows by surviving it.

Both paths move forward. One leads toward growth. The other toward ruin.
