Maadigan’s Pride

Maadigan’s Pride stood in the mountains of northern Hireotha west of the MaadiganMaghrabi trade route, hidden among isolated valleys and rugged highland terrain where winter weather and steep geography naturally discouraged travelers. The surrounding region was colder and more barren than many of Mushkinek’s earlier strongholds. Rocky slopes, thin forests, exposed ridgelines, and narrow mountain passes dominated the landscape, while snow and freezing rain frequently swept through the higher elevations.

The approach to the fortress followed little-used mountain trails winding through remote canyons and elevated valleys far removed from major settlements. The journey itself felt defensive in design. Narrow paths, unstable ground, and sharp elevation changes limited movement and made large-scale assault difficult long before the stronghold itself came into view.

Unlike Greymantle or Verdance Rest, Maadigan’s Pride projected little refinement. The fortress was massive, sprawling, and unmistakably militarized in appearance. Thick defensive walls enclosed a broad complex capable of housing large numbers of followers, supplies, and livestock. Outside the keep, a hastily expanded village spread across the valley floor, its rough timber buildings and muddy roads reflecting rapid construction rather than permanence.

Inside, the fortress remained stark and practical. Bare stone walls, heavy wooden furnishings, and constantly burning hearth fires filled the halls with the smells of smoke, damp wool, wet earth, and timber. The scale of the structure impressed Herte more than its appearance. Maadigan’s Pride felt built for endurance and defense, a mountain fortress intended to survive isolation, siege, and collapse rather than inspire admiration.
