Aylman returns to Eslading with dangerous knowledge and darker intentions. Phine, only fourteen, is left to navigate a world where every ally is a stranger—and every choice, a risk.

Elgyon presses forward on a mission whose end no one could have foreseen, driven by duty and haunted by the cost.

For the few who remain dedicated, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. But for those consumed by ambition, even their own needs come second to desire.

The Shadow of Silent Losses follows a boy’s coming of age in the ruins of trust—and the test of a man’s loyalty and will in the face of impossible choices.

Characters

Main Characters

These are the central figures who drive the story forward. They are deeply involved in the major conflicts, themes, and emotional arcs of the narrative. Most chapters will follow or reference one or more of them directly, and their choices often shape the world around them.

Aylman

Aylman is the eldest son of Hile, a driven and resourceful young man whose ambition often outpaces his scruples. At around twenty-four years old, he has already earned a reputation in Eslading for his skill, work ethic, and ability to navigate the blurred lines between enterprise and exploitation. Hardworking and clever, Aylman is also deeply pragmatic—comfortable bending rules and forging discreet alliances if it means gaining an edge. His dealings with local bandits and the Thieves Guild reflect a mindset shaped more by opportunity than by principle.

Yet, for all his moral flexibility, Aylman is not without conscience. He rarely sees his choices as harmful—until the harm becomes undeniable. And when it does, the quiet voice of guilt reminds him that some lines, once crossed, don’t vanish just because they were profitable.

Captain Belle (aka Maribel)

Captain Belle, known to some as Maribel, leads one of the most effective and enigmatic paramilitary bands operating in the Vidoran wilds. Composed of outcasts, survivors, and hardened fighters, her group has earned a reputation for targeting robbers, slavers, and predators—often delivering justice where law and order fail to reach. Under Belle’s command, the gang functions with remarkable discipline and strategic clarity, a reflection of her personal transformation from survivor to tactician.

Belle’s past is marked by hardship and violence, much of it left unspoken. What’s clear is that her strength was not born from privilege, but from pain—and from the rare kindness of those who earned her trust along the way. Her loyalty is hard-won, her leadership unshakable, and her moral compass, though scarred, points fiercely toward protecting the vulnerable and punishing the wicked.

Whispers of her past follow her, and so do the echoes of old names and broken histories. But for those who ride under her banner, Captain Belle is not just a leader—she’s proof that strength can rise from ruin, and that justice doesn’t always wear a uniform.

Elgyon

Elgyon is the son of a hunter, raised in the wilderness and trained in the quiet skills of tracking, observation, and survival. Though he possesses all the instincts and precision of a master woodsman, he lacks the appetite for killing that often defines the hunter’s path. Instead, Elgyon channeled his talents into the shadows of society—rising through the ranks of the Information Guild, where silence, subtlety, and clarity of thought are prized above all else.

Now a high-ranking operative, Elgyon’s deep well of knowledge and personal connections make him an invaluable asset as Cendomvita’s political landscape begins to fracture. Sharp-eyed, disciplined, and guided by a quiet moral core, Elgyon is not the type to command a room—but he’s often the one who sees what others miss, and who moves when it matters most.

Phine

At fourteen, Phine was Hile’s youngest son—and already far more than just a boy running errands. Energetic, curious, and relentlessly observant, Phine approached every task with wide eyes and sharp questions, never content to follow orders without understanding their purpose. Though obedient by nature, he was no passive learner. He studied as hard as he worked, developing a grasp of history, geography, and politics that often rivaled the grown men around him. On the road, Phine’s knack for picking up regional dialects allowed him to blend in effortlessly—sometimes even pass for a native. More than that, he had a rare talent for earning trust. Whether with hardened merchants or wary strangers, Phine had a way of drawing people close—and keeping them there. In a world darkened by suspicion, his gift for friendship shone bright.

Samir

A discreet and sharp-minded operative of the Information Guild, Samir was assigned to accompany Aylman—not as a bodyguard, but as a set of silent eyes. With a quiet demeanor and a keen sense of danger, he was well-trained in both observation and survival. Samir understood how to fade into the background, how to read a man’s words by what he didn’t say, and how to extract truth from misdirection. But even skill has its limits. Tasked with uncovering deeper motives and loyalties, Samir soon found himself navigating a path far more perilous than expected—one that would test his training, and his fate.

Sergeant Barnaby Grimm

Posted at the western edge of the coastal plains near Ostengate, Grimm serves as the fort’s Sergeant of the Guard and a living relic of the Old Guard—a man with deep knowledge of forgotten trails, hidden hamlets, and the buried history of Cendomvita. Long ago, Grimm joined the Vidoran army while searching for his kidnapped sister, Maribel, a pursuit that shaped both his career and his resolve. Over the years, he built a reputation as a capable and weathered soldier—practical in his ethics, occasionally amenable to a well-placed bribe, but equally known for offering help when it truly mattered. Many of his patrols, by chance or choice, passed near his family’s long-abandoned farmstead in the foothills. For most of his life, Grimm was married to the uniform. That changed when he crossed paths with Elgyon and Phine—two figures who stirred in him something long dormant: purpose beyond duty.

Ylena

Daughter of the infamous assassin known only as the Shadow, Ylena was raised in silence and steel. Trained from childhood in the arts of concealment, observation, and the swift dispatching of life, she grew into a figure of poise, precision, and unflinching control. But where her father reveled in lethality, Ylena recoiled from it. She had no qualms killing to protect herself or the innocent—but the cold logic of assassination never suited her soul.

Instead, she turned her inherited skills toward a different calling: the Information Guild. There, her talent for moving unseen, reading people, and slipping past barriers—physical and otherwise—propelled her quickly through the ranks. By her mid-twenties, she briefly held the title of Guildmaster in Ostengate, though she quickly recognized that leadership from behind a desk dulled her edge. Ylena was meant to be in the field, not behind ledgers.

Slender, wiry, and athletic, Ylena’s short-cropped hair and unassuming travel gear conceal a presence that can, when necessary, captivate an entire ballroom. Intelligent and compassionate, she commands loyalty—but she keeps her own feelings buried deep, hidden behind layers of practiced restraint. Those who know her well are few.

Secondary Characters

These characters play important supporting roles. They may serve as allies, foils, mentors, or obstacles to the primary characters. While they do not dominate the story, their presence is frequent, and they often experience meaningful development or contribute significantly to subplots.

Agis

Agis is the proprietor of the Traveler’s Fare Inn, a well-traveled stop nestled along a key trade route in Vidor, north of Eslading. Outwardly, he presents as a shrewd but hospitable innkeeper, known for his discretion, sharp memory, and ability to read a room with unsettling accuracy. Beneath the surface, Agis operates as a key figure within the Ravens, leading one of their underground cells. Calm under pressure and deeply strategic, he serves as a vital link between the organization’s surface-level operations and its more elusive aims. To friend or foe, Agis is always courteous—but never to be underestimated.

Brynn

A core member of Maribel’s band and her most trusted field leader, Brynn is a study in controlled contrast—roguish yet disciplined, disarming yet sharp, quietly loyal yet powerfully magnetic. His unwavering devotion to Maribel is obvious to all who know him, though the deeper truth behind that loyalty—his unspoken affection for her—remains locked behind a wall of fear and respect. He suspects the weight of her past has made intimacy an unreachable thing, and so he channels his care into service, never stepping beyond the line she hasn’t drawn.

Among the gang, Brynn’s squad is the most sought-after. He attracts fighters and thinkers alike, drawn not just to his success in the field, but to the demanding excellence he brings out in those around him. He masks his intelligence beneath an affected, uneducated dialect—an old habit he uses to test, disarm, and control his surroundings until he’s ready to reveal who he really is.

To outsiders, he may seem like a lucky brawler. To those who serve beside him, Brynn is the steel beneath the banner—sharp, steady, and deeply bound to the woman who leads them.

Chamaliak

Slipping easily between alleys and council halls, Chamaliak is a man whose shadow stretches far longer than his name. Publicly, he’s known in certain circles as a resourceful agent of the Thieves’ Guild—one of Aylman’s more unsavory contacts. But those who dig deeper find that Chamaliak’s influence runs much deeper, and much darker. A skilled thief, assassin, and manipulator, he moves with quiet precision through the underbelly of politics, trusted by the powerful when they need something done quietly… or cleanly. What few suspect is just how much of the game he’s actually playing—and how far his reach extends beyond what even Aylman imagines.

Corporal Enos

A quiet and constant presence at Fort Runhollow, Corporal Enos is the kind of soldier few notice—but none would question. Efficient, disciplined, and almost unnervingly observant, Enos carries out his duties with quiet precision. Though his rank is modest, he reports directly to General Thalbout and is often entrusted with tasks that suggest a far deeper confidence placed in him.

Enos says little, reveals less, and listens always. Beneath his reserved exterior lies a sharp mind attuned to the undercurrents of command—particularly the quiet tensions that ripple through the Vidoran ranks. Those who dismiss him as just another non-commissioned officer rarely realize how much he sees—or how carefully he weighs what to do with what he knows.

In a world of noise and ambition, Corporal Enos operates in the margins—calm, calculating, and watching everything.

General Hamirazhin

General Hamirazhin is a commanding and enigmatic officer in the Vidoran army, entrusted with oversight of an entire division spread across three key forts. His primary stronghold lies two days’ ride north of Eslading at Runhollow, from which he exercises tight, uncompromising control. Coldly efficient, Hamirazhin is known for his battlefield cunning and unflinching brutality—qualities that have earned him both fear and respect from those under his command.

Whispers surround his rise and his methods, suggesting that his authority is bolstered by more than just military discipline. Though outwardly loyal to crown and command, Hamirazhin operates with a calculated independence, and signs soon emerge that his allegiances may lie elsewhere. He is a man whose moves are never without purpose—and whose full reach remains hidden until it’s far too late.

Kishman

Though known as a bandit leader, Kishman was in truth an undercover operative of the Information Guild—tasked with infiltrating and destabilizing the criminal underworld. He built a disciplined, highly structured band of raiders that operated more like a paramilitary unit than a gang. Under his leadership, they targeted other bandits and traffickers, never civilians.

Kishman led with calm authority, favoring order over fear and fostering loyalty through fairness and vision. He quickly recognized Maribel’s strength, intelligence, and drive, and took her under his wing—not as a subordinate, but as a leader in the making.

What set Kishman apart was not just his mission, but his belief that even in the darkest corners of society, something good could be built. In Maribel, he saw the rare possibility of lasting change—someone who could lead not for power, but for the common good.

Mushkinek

Named—some say burdened—after the infamous instigator of the great uprising more than two centuries prior, this Mushinek carved out a leadership role within Captain Belle’s band. Measured, composed, and often difficult to read, he played a vital part in early resistance planning. But when the movement shifted from strategy to sacrifice, Mushinek withdrew. His decision to walk away, just as the stakes became clear, left many unsettled. Whether it was fear, principle, or something else that led to his departure remains a point of quiet speculation. The name he bore once belonged to a destroyer of nations. What legacy this Mushinek leaves behind is still uncertain.

Mentioned Characters

These characters play important supporting roles. They may serve as allies, foils, mentors, or obstacles to the primary characters. While they do not dominate the story, their presence is frequent, and they often experience meaningful development or contribute significantly to subplots.

Aresa Grimm

Aresa Grimm was born in the foothills of Vidora, where tight-knit kinship defined daily life. Unlike many girls fostered due to hardship, Aresa left her small settlement by choice—to gain skills, broaden her horizons, and eventually find a partner. At twelve, she arrived in Grimmsport, where she assisted an older couple and observed the world with cautious discernment.

At first, she found Brayden Grimm charming but immature—a boy whose lightheartedness seemed to signal a lack of ambition. But over four years, her perspective shifted. Brayden’s steady presence, deep loyalty, and unpretentious warmth gradually won her heart. When she came of age, she chose to marry him—not because he was perfect, but because he made her laugh, and because she sensed he would never abandon what mattered.

Aresa’s love for Brayden deepened with time, as he proved himself not only a tireless worker but a faithful partner and father. Together, they raised Barnaby and Maribel—and were joyfully expecting a third child after years of hoping. Aresa cherished family and devotion, but she was no dreamer; her choices were guided by strength, intuition, and a clear sense of self.

Quietly perceptive and emotionally grounded, Aresa Grimm became the heart of the family: a woman who saw people for who they were, and loved them fiercely when they proved worthy of that love.

Balna

Balna is Hile’s oldest cousin on his mother’s side and member of the Eslading Council. He is also a long-standing source of friction within the family. Wealthy, unmarried, and childless, Balna commands significant influence as the head of the Security Guild, overseeing law enforcement, customs, and border patrols across a broad region. But despite his status, he remains a deeply embittered man, driven less by ambition than by a sense of grievance—personal, familial, and generational.

Old wounds run deep. Balna’s resentment toward Hile is rooted not only in decades of opposition but in the tangled legacies of both bloodlines. Whispers still link Balna’s paternal ancestry to the long-ago Mushinek uprising, and the past between their mothers—sisters whose lives were shaped by a broken engagement and an unwanted marriage—has never fully healed. To Balna, Hile’s success is not earned but inherited, a theft that began in the previous generation and has only grown with time.

Though Hile’s family has treated him with respect, Balna’s bitterness simmers just beneath the surface. Every achievement by Hile, every step forward taken by his children, feels like another blow to Balna’s pride. His authority may be wide-reaching, but in his eyes, it will never measure up to what was taken from him.

Brayden Grimm

Brayden Grimm is a humble and respected fisherman from Grimmsport, a village founded by his ancestors on the Gulf of Vidora. Though born into quiet wealth, Brayden chose a life of modesty and hard work, believing deeply that money earned is money spent wisely. His life is marked by a quiet dignity and approachable charm—a man equally at home leading in silence or laughing with neighbors.

As a young teen, Brayden met Aresa, a girl fostered from the foothills. Though their first impressions of one another were mixed, their relationship grew into a deep and enduring love built on trust, laughter, and resilience. Together they raised a close-knit family—Barnaby, Maribel, and a third child on the way—anchoring their lives in shared purpose and affection.

Brayden is a devoted husband and father, engaged in every part of his children’s lives—from birth to early-morning fishing expeditions and lessons in survival. He is principled but not rigid, serious but not severe. Loved by his family and admired by his village, Brayden stands as a quiet symbol of generational strength, carrying on legacy without flaunting it, and earning loyalty by example rather than demand.

Bretislaus Katea

Bretislaus Katea serves as chief minister to King Steinar, a position he occupies not just with skill, but with a sharp instinct for power and self-preservation. Charismatic, intelligent, and unapologetically ambitious, Bretislaus is a man who understands the weight of influence—and how to wield it to his advantage. He sees politics not as a duty, but as a game of leverage and foresight, one he intends to win.

Though he claims loyalty to crown and kingdom, Bretislaus’s true allegiance lies with his own career. He’s not above making deals with questionable allies, confident in his belief that he can manage—or outmaneuver—whatever forces he unleashes. To some, he is a brilliant strategist; to others, a dangerous opportunist. But all agree on one thing: Bretislaus Katea is not a man to underestimate.

Captain Gothah

Gothah is a seasoned privateer operating out of the Gulf of Vidora, a respected member of the Pirate’s Guild and one of the rare few in that world trusted by King Steinar himself. Known for his maritime skill, discretion, and unshakable loyalty to those he deems worthy, Gothah walks a careful line between guild interests and royal favor.

Though his profession places him outside traditional authority, Gothah has proven time and again that allegiance need not require a uniform. When called upon for dangerous or delicate missions, he delivers—not because he must, but because he chooses to. Resourceful, well-connected, and more honorable than his reputation might suggest, Gothah is the kind of ally who appears precisely when he’s most needed—and vanishes just as cleanly when the job is done.

Dathan

Dathan is a wealthy and well-connected figure from Cendomvita’s western coast, though much of his past—and his affiliations—remain cloaked in mystery. He arrives in the narrative as the bearer of a high-stakes commission, backed by documentation so official that few dare challenge it. His ability to produce royal seals, navigate legal entanglements, and bypass military restrictions speaks to influence far beyond what most can wield.

Dathan carries himself with cool authority, his words chosen with care, his presence unnerving in its quiet confidence. There’s something about him that suggests not all of his power comes from legitimate sources—his threats are subtle, but their weight is unmistakable. Whether diplomat, agent, or something else entirely, Dathan’s true motives remain hidden beneath layers of charm, danger, and implication.

Farmer Gillian

Farmer Gillian is a well-known figure from the village near the Eastern Origin Spring—an honest, early-rising man whose routines rarely changed and whose patience was tested more than once by prankster soldiers stationed nearby. He became a favorite (and frequent) target of young Grimm’s harmless nighttime mischief, waking more than once to find his livestock hilariously rearranged: goats in the henhouse, hens in the cow stall, and cows in the pigpen.

Despite the tricks, Gillian was more bewildered than bitter. A man of modest temper and dry humor, he was known to mutter about “damned military boys with too much time on their hands,” but he never reported the pranks. Deep down, Gillian likely recognized the pranks as youthful energy rather than malice—and perhaps even enjoyed being part of a tale that made soldiers laugh in the dark years to come.

Gillian stands as a small but endearing figure in the village’s lore: a symbol of normalcy, routine, and the unassuming resilience of civilian life during uncertain times.

Hile

Hile is a respected and influential leader within the Transportation Guild of Eslading, known for transforming his father’s modest delivery business into one of the most expansive overland trade networks in Cendomvita. While a portion of his work handles local shipments across Vidora and Elowen, Hile’s true strength lies in coordinating long-haul transport—navigating treacherous routes, complex borders, and shifting political landscapes with precision and foresight.

A lover of maps, scrolls, and the study of civilizations, Hile is as much a scholar as he is a merchant. His deep knowledge of history, geography, and politics has shaped both his business and his worldview, and he has passed that same intellectual curiosity on to his youngest son, Phine. Despite his methodical nature, Hile rarely makes important decisions without the counsel of his wife, Ashira, whose empathy and intuition serve as a critical counterbalance to his rational mind.

With trusted connections in the Information Guild—and a reputation that verges on honorary membership—Hile is a figure whose influence extends beyond commerce, touching realms of knowledge, strategy, and quiet resistance.

Jeryl

Jeryl is the innkeeper of the Crescent’s Edge in Bilan, a well-frequented establishment that balances comfort with discretion. Known for his easy manner and sharp memory, Jeryl is a reliable face in the local landscape—especially to those who know how to mind their business and pay on time.

He shares a strong business rapport with Aylman, and while he presents as a good-natured host, Jeryl is not one to let principle get in the way of profit. For the right price, he’s willing to look the other way, pass along a message, or provide a room that’s particularly well out of sight. In Bilan, trust doesn’t always come with morals—but in Jeryl’s case, it does come with consistency.

Joe

A fixture of the Empty Goblet tavern, Joe grew up scrubbing its floors, hauling water, and cleaning up after patrons. Born in the Ostengate slums to a sailor father he barely remembers and a mother who worked the streets, Joe found a kind of stability in the tavern’s rhythms. Though not the quickest thinker, he’s steady, loyal, and unshakably dependable. Over the years, he’s learned to pour drinks, spot trouble, and keep quiet when it matters. Occasionally entrusted with running the bar in the barkeeper’s absence, Joe carries out every task with quiet pride, grateful for the place he’s earned—even if the world outside the tavern walls still looks down on him.

King Steinar

Sole heir to the throne of his forebears, Steinar ruled more by presence than intervention. Having wed a princess of Maghrabi in a calculated union of state, he surprised even his closest advisors by growing to genuinely love her. Together they raised a son and two daughters, and for a time, the kingdom basked in the quiet rhythm of stability. A passive monarch by nature, Steinar entrusted most governance to his council, rarely challenging their decisions. But peace is fragile. When foreign incursions and internal banditry threatened his capital, Steinar shed his passivity and ruled with an iron fist. Harsh decrees, unchecked punishments, and a paranoid grip on power drove even his most loyal subjects into the arms of the very outlaws he hoped to crush—transforming a king of compromise into a symbol of tyranny.

Kruld

Kruld once lived a quiet life on the shores of the Maghrabi Sound before fate tore him from it. The path that followed was neither chosen nor gentle, but Kruld adapted with quiet resolve. Over time, he emerged as one of Captain Belle’s most trusted companions—respected not for brutality, but for his thoughtfulness, steadiness, and unshakable loyalty.

Despite his rough exterior, Kruld is deeply principled. He leads with patience, fairness, and a calm authority that inspires trust. He values unity over dominance and places greater weight on shared purpose than personal glory. When asked to take a younger recruit under his wing, Kruld accepted without hesitation, seeing in the boy not only potential, but a chance to pass on the lessons hard-won from his own trials.

Though he never imagined the life he now leads, Kruld has carved out a place of meaning within it—a place built not on fear, but on loyalty, earned respect, and quiet strength.
